Philadelphia Theatre Company honored with six 2005 Barrymore Awards, including Best Play for Take Me Out

Philadelphia Theatre Company was honored with six Barrymore Awards at the 2005 Barrymore Awards for Excellence in Theatre, held on Monday, October 10, at the Merriam Theater in Philadelphia. All four of our 2004-2005 season productions were honored:
  • Outstanding Overall Production of a Play
    Take Me Out

  • Outstanding Direction of a Play
    Maria Mileaf for The Story

  • Outstanding Music Direction
    Kimberly Grigsby for Elegies: A Song Cycle

  • Outstanding Leading Actor in a Play
    Bill Irwin as Dalton Trumbo in Trumbo

  • Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Play
    Kraig Swartz as Mason in Take Me Out

  • Outstanding Ensemble in a Musical
    Elegies: A Song Cycle
Since the inception of the Barrymore Awards in 1995, Philadelphia Theatre Company has been nominated for 99 awards, winning 30 times.

The Barrymore Awards are the greater Philadelphia region's comprehensive theatre awards program, produced annually by the Theatre Alliance of Greater Philadelphia. For more information on the Theatre Alliance or the Barrymore Awards, visit www.theatrealliance.org.

Philadelphia Theatre Company is Philadelphia's only non-profit professional theater dedicated exclusively to producing regional and world premieres of works by contemporary American playwrights. Under the leadership of Producing Artistic Director, Sara Garonzik, Philadelphia Theatre Company has had ever-increasing national impact having produced over 30 world premieres of new American plays. Recent world premiere productions include: Bruce Graham's According to Goldman; Jeffrey Hatcher's A Picasso; Daniel Stern's comedy Barbra's Wedding; John Henry Redwood's No Niggers, No Jews, No Dogs; J.T. Roger's White People; David Ives' Lives of the Saints; three-time Tony Award-winning Master Class by Terrence McNally; Bunny Bunny by Alan Zweibel; and the American premiere of Birdy by Naomi Wallace. A Picasso received its New York premiere at the Manhattan Theatre Club in April, 2005. Philadelphia Theatre Company was chosen Best Theatre Company 2003 by Philadelphia Magazine.

Philadelphia Theatre Company recently embarked on a groundbreaking Capital Campaign in support of building its new home, the Suzanne Roberts Theatre, scheduled to open in Fall, 2007. The company has been in residence at the historic Plays & Players Theater since 1982.
