Drama Contact

Education at Philadelphia Theatre Company
Philadelphia Theatre Company's Drama Contact program is designed to bring students and teachers closer to the best in American theater. When integrated into the classroom, our plays inspire students to examine the world around them in vital and challenging new ways. And because our plays explore the rich ground of history, economics and politics in America, History, Social Studies, English and Theatre teachers find our plays relevant to their curricula.

Program components include:
  • Student Matinees are offered for each age-appropriate play. Students will enjoy a pre-show demonstration of how scenery, lighting, and sound support the play, as well as a post-show Q&A session with the cast. Tickets are $10-$20, and include a Teacher Resource Guide and Student Study Guides. Teachers are also invited to attend a workshop and preview performance of the show.

Student matinees will return for the 2008/2009 season.
Please call 215.985.1400 x106 for more information.

  • Teacher Resource Guides provide a comprehensive overview of the production and its curriculum connections, including a script, a dramaturgical packet, lesson plans, Playwise Magazine excerpts, suggestions for additional classroom activities, and production materials.
  • Student Study Guides invite students to enter the world of the play, introducing the characters, themes, and questions raised in the play via worksheets, discussion questions, and scenes to examine in the classroom.

  • Led by our Teaching Artists, Prep Sessions guide students through thematic exploration, activities, script reading, and discussion. Students are prepared for production elements that may be challenging for any first-time theater-goer, increasing their comfort level at the theater.

  • Study Units allow for deeper exploration of the production and its topical issues than is possible in a single Prep Session. A Study Unit consists of two Prep Sessions in the classroom prior to the performance and one follow-up session after.

  • School Passport provides an opportunity for teachers to partner with Philadelphia Theatre Company for a full season. Ideal for performing arts programs, this program allows students to explore multiple elements of each production, including the script, acting, directing, and design. Students also learn to analyze theatrical expression through the comparison of four different directors, design teams, and playwrights.

  • Teacher/Educator Workshops are offered during the preview week of each production, allowing educators to experience the Drama Contact process first-hand. Teachers participate in the pre-show activities that our Teaching Artists will be leading in classrooms. These workshops have also become an invaluable opportunity for educators to give suggestions for further developing the program.

  • Classroom Residencies are specifically tailored to the needs of each school. Residencies often enrichment for a book or focus already present in the classroom curriculum, and can also be specialized enrichment to develop students' leadership, public speaking, and problem solving skills. The length of a residency varies from three days to a full semester, depending on the goals of the program.

  • Career Spotlight allows student groups to visit Philadelphia Theatre Company to learn about the different careers in the theater, both backstage and in the office. Students observe the crew at work, interview the production staff, and visit our administrative offices. An accompanying workbook gives students a place to record what they learn.
