Career Development Initiative
Philadelphia Theatre Company's Career Development Initiative has one overall objective: to inspire and train aspiring theatre professionals. While revealing to young people the limitless possibilities for a rewarding career in theatre arts, we seek to develop a genuine pool of committed behind-the-scenes personnel that we, as well as other theatres, can draw upon. Our program address the difficulties that emerging professionals encounter in gaining on-the-job experience and achieving a foothold into their chosen field – an often elusive goal for administrative and production trainees.
Over the last decade, PTC had nurtured over one hundred aspiring professionals in a wide range of administrative, production, and artistic areas, many of whom now work professionally in theatres in Philadelphia and across the country.

Internship application deadlines are as follows:
Winter Internship (December - February): deadline November 15
Spring Internship (March – May): deadline February 1
Summer Internship (June – August): deadline May 1
- High School Independent Study Project

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, however, we are only able to accept two high school interns in Winter of 2009/2010 and two in Spring 2010, so the earlier applications are submitted the better. - Are internships paid positions?
Philadelphia Theatre Company believes we would not be able to accomplish our goals without the help of enthusiastic, capable interns. While our ultimate goal is to launch a program which compensates interns for this invaluable help, we are unfortunately unable to monetarily compensate any of our interns at this time.
- Do internships include housing or travel expenses?
We do not provide housing for our interns, so all interns must be local and willing to commute. In some circumstances travel expenses may be provided, but travel reimbursement for interns is not standard.
- Do I get to attend Philadelphia Theatre Company productions and events?
Of course! We do our best to include our interns and make them part of the company family, and this includes invitations to all our shows and events that occur during the duration of their internship.
- How many hours a week would I be required to intern?
Before starting an internship you will have a meeting with the department you are interning with to set a schedule. Because internships are unpaid we do our best to be respectful of our interns' time; however, interns should anticipate spending a minimum of 10-15 hours a week with us.
- What length of internships do you offer?
Again, as these are unpaid positions we do our best to be flexible! While the minimum length of an internship is two months, some interns have spent anywhere from a two to ten months (a full season) with us. Most often interns will spend summer, fall, winter or spring with us depending on their availability.
- What experience level is required to intern?
Our interns range from high school students to emerging theatre professionals. While your current level of experience is not always the deciding factor in your chances of working with us, it will always be used as a guide for what responsibilities you'll be given.
- I'm in high school and want to intern. How can I make that happen?
There are a number of ways to try to make it work! First, check with your teachers or guidance counselor to see if there's an internship program, senior project, or community service requirement for your school, and ask them if an internship with us would qualify for that program. If the answer is yes, have your teacher or principal contact mbeers@philadelphiatheatrecompany.org! If the answer is no, consider applying to be a student volunteer.
