Orson's Shadow

PHILADELPHIA PREMIERE
By Austin Pendleton
Directed by James J. Christy
May 4 - June 3, 2007

Backstage Drama, Legendary Egos, Glamorous Affairs. Welcome to Showbiz.
Set in 1960, Orson's Shadow cleverly dramatizes legendary director Orson Welles' troubled attempts to bring Ionesco's Rhinoceros to the stage. The stars, Laurence Olivier and Joan Plowright, are deep in the throes of an extramarital affair. Add to the mix Olivier's glamorous but unstable wife, Vivien Leigh, and drama critic Kenneth Tynan, and the result is a recipe for backstage humor and high drama.

Cast
Rachel Botchan, Brent Harris, Wilbur Edwin Henry, Joe Hickey, Derick Loafmann, and Susan Wilder.

PTC has picked a winner! An ingeniously contrived backstage comedy! What live theater should be!
–KYW Newsradio 1060

Susan Wilder's evocation of Vivien Leigh, with all her neurasthenic glamour is remarkable. Her seductive moment with Ken Tynan is SPECTACULAR!
–Philadelphia Inquirer

Captivating performances from the strong cast! There's much to admire about director James J. Christy's intelligent and focused production!
